Kidnapping and sense of insecurity

Dear Editor,

The broad-day - light kidnapping of one Anchal Samity Member, Mijum Ada from his residence at Liru Village, Likabali , West Siang on February 26 has brought a sense of complete insecurity to the already tensed-border area people. Reportedly', at about 1000 hrs, the Panchayat leader was approached by six masked men equipped with firearms and demanded rice and one lac rupees in cash.

When Ada expressed his inability to part with any rice and cash, the masked men all of sudden pointed pistol and dragged him away to a white Maruti car and took to unknown place. After outcry by the family members, the news of kidnapping spread like jungle-fire and, the youths of the nearby area dared to chase and find out the kidnappers. Hearing such incidence, the state police personnel from Arunachal and Assam as well, immediately swung into action showing their full ability and started their search operation with information and cooperation from the local youths and villagers.

The kidnappers learnt to be local youths, sensing their soon- arrest following full chase by the police and villagers left the victim alone leaving behind the car and fled to unknown place.

Although the victim had been rescued, it is a matter of serious concerns not only for the people residing in border areas but also to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The credit must goes to police, local youths and specially to Assam Police who despite unacquainted with hills, jungle,, & surroundings of the area, took prompt action to undertake the search operation and rescued the victim with cooperation from the local police and people.

While condemning such anti-social act by our local youths, it is urged that the youths reportedly arrested be given extreme punishment as per law and to investigate into the kidnapping case thoroughly to find out the root cause of such undesired activities.

It may be noted that the public does not yet know about Sanjay Kumar, an official of Mineral Development & Trading Corporation kidnapped three months before.

The state government should also come out with some comprehensive policy on security measures to curb  such crimes and initiate policies for unemployed youths so that they are not compelled to opt for such crimes.

Yours,

Tapak Nguso Lendo,

Secretary,

State BJP

Transparency being maintained

Dear Editor,

This is apropos the letter issued by Techni Necha, a public leader on Feb 25. I being in-charge of the implementing agency of JNNURM scheme express my profound thankfulness to him for his kind appreciation extended to district administration and UD & H Department over the way we are improving some of the Itanagar colony roads. The need of the hour is indeed cooperation from all sections of people residing in Itanagar. On our part, we put all our endeavour to produce best output for the interest of public. The district administration is really helping the UD and H department by evicting all encroachers along the roads for making it as model road.

The support of Capital DC Dr S B Deepak Kumar and ADM Talo Potom is really appreciable.

The personnel monitoring and supervision constantly by Potom himself till late hours for many days made it possible to widen minimum workable width of the proposed five model roads which is highly appreciable.

Regarding implementation of JNNURM schemes for improvement of all roads, it is clarified that fund allocated under the present JNNURM scheme is limited. Hence, out of more than 100 colony roads of Itanagar, the UD &H, department has taken over around 45 roads of different length from PWD. Out of the 45, 15 roads have been proposed for construction as model roads by the Govt. The eviction for widening of these model roads is being carried out by the district administration presently. It was also decided to improve the remaining normal roads in the existing width. Accordingly, the construction of drainage system and retaining walls etc for normal roads are also being carried out without widening the road.  It is also our endeavour to maintain quality and transparency in the implementation of the scheme.

Yours,

R D Lewi,

Dy Director, Capital,

Complex division.

Hindi wins over English

Dear Editor

The articulation by S. Mundayoor on the rise and fall of English language in our state is an earnest attempt but not complete. I do not dispute the rise of English language in the period when our state was a union territory as the administrative block was in Shillong and English had been the official language.

The dispute remains in its fall, our state did manage to keep English as the official language but only in theory and not in practice, the main reason to such a development was not only the failure of the teachers but the socio-historical conditions of the state at that time, cause unlike Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram the first and second generation of teachers had mostly been either Assamese speakers or Hindi while in the case of the above three states there second generation teachers were mostly indigenous citizen who had been educated in English. Thus in the long run Hindi won over both Assamese and English. The success of Hindi perpetuated with coming of Doordarshan and Prashar Bharti. Also Hindi cinema worked as a catalyst, when people in Meghalya and Mizoram were singing hits of 'Greece' and 'Abba' we were tuning to Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. Hindi has managed to perpetuate till today as the people started drawing status and class positions with its use. The main set back of English is due to its replacement by Hindi.

Zilpha Modi

What’s wrong with your newspaper?

Dear Editor,

It was indeed sad to hear about the alleged offence committed by some engineers as published in your daily. And if proven guilty, deemed punishment should be handed out to them. However, I thought it was immature on your part to have used their names, their designation would had sufficed for the news article, not that they are some hard criminals on the loose and are a threat to the society directly. Before that, I also recall you publishing a news article related to lodging of FIR for the same case and the accused handing out his clarification subsequently. I am therefore somehow forced to believe that the same news was just a follow up.

I thought it would not be uncalled for if I remind you that, the jurisprudence in our country is such that no one is assumed guilty until proven so in the court of law. But unfortunately, in our country and specially in our state, the media does not seems to have understood the logic behind it or may be, its the free market economy that is driving it to its lowest ebb of morality. Sensationalism and character assassination seems to be the new mantra.

And off-late your house seems to have become very good in doing it, happily obliging for the free unpaid sensational local news. We see it every now and then in your readers column with accusations and counter accusations by some 'tom', 'dick' and 'harry' taking out their personal grudge in public which really do not have any bearing for the general mass. I am a nobody to tell you how to run your paper, nor am I asking you to please anyone.

But, this I hope you would understand, before calling names give some thought about the impact that your news would have on someone and their near and dear ones. All that I am asking you is to use your discretion more often.

I know, our state have a lot of self-proclaimed activist who might not agree with what I am stating here, but as I said earlier let there be no media trial, let the media be the source of information. Let the law take its own course

Yours,

K. Suresh,

Naharlagun,  (on email).

Work culture and Youth

Dear Editor,

We are suffering lots of traffic jam due to renovation of NH-52, but I would like to draw the attention of executing agency not to blind fold the public of the state by simply carpeting the surface of the road by the poor means of specifications, like inverse super elevation, not maintaining the cambering, poor mixing, executing the work without engineers in charge. Engineers in this state are busy in making their own benefit by neglecting their duties.

Equally I would like to draw the attentions of various student unions, specially Unemployed engineers students union of this state. At least they can raise their voice against such poor specifications of works, rather than running door to door of every departmental office for vacancies of posts.

When will the educated people learn to serve this state selflessly? This state is affected by a very dreadful epidemic known as 'deaf and dumb'. Please raise some voice against such in justices.

Best of luck to the youths of this State.

Yours,

A youth (on email).

Silence and Khonsa

Dear editor

Through the columns of this esteemed daily I would like to express myself on the problem going on in Khonsa.

The thing which the people of Tirap can't seem to understand in this time of the bloody clashes in Khonsa is that why is the state govt keeping such a deafening silence not commenting on it let alone taking any action.

The people see no silver lining behind these dark clouds, they seem hopeless and if you happen to ask a person from there about the problem ,they would most certainly say that the problem is here to stay & with the state govt taking little interest it might as well be so. This is so discouraging & disheartening.

The feeling of security has gone to the wind as the security forces just stand as mere spectators when all this clashes go on, as if there is nexus between the security forces and the insurgents. Most of the departments are running without Heads of departments as they are on the run leading to stagnation of all works.

I would like to express my great appreciation to All Tirap Students Union for the work they are doing.

Please keep it up.

In this state of ours it is the student community that has to take up many task otherwise taken up by political parties and public leaders.

Yours,

Khunw, Khonsa.

Set an example

Dear Editor,

The Hiya Youth Trust had launched fight against the corruption practice committed by Tanung Jamoh, the Assistant Engineer, Ziro Sub-Division Department of Hydro Power Development. We appreciate the City police led by its SP Chukhu Appa, the Officer-in-Charge of Banderdewa Police station N. Sora and K. Dev, the Investigating Officer in the case and the entire police team of Banderdewa Police station for prompt action against such corrupt officials. They are setting good examples for their departmental folks. We also urge the authority concerned not to grant anticipatory bail to Jamoh, the prime accused in the corruption case.

Therefore we would like to urge the home department to issue red alert about Jamoh and ensure that he is arrested as early as possible.

Further we also demand immediate termination of his service to set stringent example against corruption.

Yours,
